Although 40 yards was the generally accepted range for patterning shotguns when I was a lad; my longest shot so far killing a deer with buckshot is 75 yards.

I have a Winchester pump that I bought some 25 years ago with the express pupose of shooting buckshot for deer hunting. It patterns both #1 and #4 buck (3" Federal Premium) extremely well.

The longest shot I've personally witnessed with buckshot was with 2 3/4" 00 buck shot from an old Winchester Model 12 at 100 yards; dropped a nice buck dead in it's tracks.

If someone takes the time to pattern their shotgun and determine what loads it likes; they'll shoot a bit further than you think.
